Welcome to the Archaeo Book Club!

We are an online community who share a love of archaeology and books.

Read on below to learn more about how the book club started, its aims, and what it involves.

How did it all begin?

The book club started when our founder Tilly (more on her below) was looking for a book club that focused specifically on archaeology-themed fictional reading. When she couldn’t find one, she decided it was time to start one herself! And so, the Archaeo Book Club was born.

The aim of the book club is to investigate how archaeology and associated heritage-related fields are depicted in popular fiction. So many stereotypes abound in fiction these days, and archaeology is absolutely no exception! Each month, the book club focuses on a particular theme, votes on a book, and reads and discusses it together (check out this month’s book here!). Books vary between fiction and popular non-fiction, with everything from poetry to short stories to epic novels. However, every discussion includes the question of whether the book was successful in portraying the field accurately.

Since starting back in 2022, the book club has now expanded to include a Scribbler’s Corner for budding and published writers, areas for virtuals co-working, movie nights, guest lectures, and more! All interactions are hosted on our Discord.

Our Founder

Dr Matilda Siebrecht (Tilly) is an archaeologist and journalist with a focus on artefact analysis and the prehistory of northern cultures. She currently works as an archaeologist and finds officer at a commercial excavation company in Germany, is the director of EXARC (the international society for experimental archaeology and open-air museums), the social media manager for the Archaeology Podcast Network, and a university lecturer in archaeology and anthropology. Alongside her paid work, she is an avid science communicator, and uses her online platform The Archaeologist’s Teacup to share archaeological information with the general public.

In her (admittedly limited) free time, Tilly loves to read, but was struggling to find time to indulge this hobby alongside her studies and work. She discovered an online book club for scientists, which allowed her to get back into a regular reading habit, and encouraged her to expand her reading picks. The strong community of book-loving scientists prompted her to wonder whether such a club also existed for archaeologists. Even better, a  club which not only encouraged people to share their love of books, but also focused on how archaeology is communicated to the public through fiction and popular non-fiction.

Our admins

Alongside Tilly (left), our book club is moderated by two other co-admins.

Ash (middle) is an experienced field archaeologist with a background in material culture and prehistory. She now runs a small business which aims to investigate scents of the past through archaeology-inspired candles (AshWood Candles)

Judith (right) is specialised in medieval literature, with a particular focus on iconography and a love of medieval Welsh history and landscape. In her spare time she loves to knit and visit historical sites with her dogs.
